So what will happen with Everton and Sporting Lisbon tomorrow evening? I’ve no idea beyond it being Everton, it will probably be tension-filled, gut-clenching and nerve-wracking. So 2-1 to Sporting, extra-time, pennos, years taken off the lives of Blues everywhere. Everton to go through on penalties.
Yes, penalties. Which tees it up for me to post these old videos of Everton’s European Cup tie from 1970-71, against Borussia Moenchengladbach, one of the first (possibly THE first) European ties to be decided with a penalty shootout.
Everton had drawn with the German champions (it was only for champions then, fourth place my arse) in the Ruhr and the night game at Goodison got off to a good start with a goal from Johnny Morrissey (looks like it might have been intended as a cross). But Moenchengladbach equalized setting up the eventual tiebreaker in front of 42,000 Evertonians.
Some great players are on show here- Everton Legends Ball, Harvey, Kendall, Royle- and Jupp Heynckes, Bertie Vogts and Gunther Netzer for the Germans. From these tapes it looks like Everton’s magnificent midfield had the mercurial Netzer well shackled; in fact he barely gets a mention. It would be a couple of years before he grew his hair long and practically single-handedly dismantled England at Wembley but on this night the Holy Trinity seemed to have kept him in check.
Roll them tapes……
Here’s the penalty shootout…..
