Many, many years ago when the internet was but a series of tin cans connected by cord, I received a reply to an email that said “LOL!!!!” My instant reaction was ” ‘Scuse Me? Is that some kinda in-your-face political statement?” Perplexed, the sender emailed back and asked whatever could I mean. I replied that I was confused that in a perfectly innocuous email someone could end it with the acronym for “Loyal Orange Lodge”, out of the blue as it were. Were they making some kind of political statement I asked?
Cause for me LOL will always be “Loyal Orange Lodge”, the wording on sashes and banners and Lambeg drums, all on display today, the Twelfth of July, at Orange Order marches and rallies in Ulster, Scotland and Canada and in other far flung outposts of the Ulster-Scots diaspora.
You can take the boy out of Ireland, but you can’t take Ireland out of the boy.
I can’t see that internet quickspeak without flashing to men in bowler hats, and sashes marching down some country road behind a flute band and the biggest drums you have ever seen. They have some great tunes too, I’ll give them that…..
